Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I access a computer or program at the Health Center remotely?
  • In order to obtain remote access to programs or computers from outside the UCHC, you have to establish a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. With a VPN connection, you become literally part of the network even though you are not physically located at the Health Center. This allows you to do everything you can normally do while at the Health Center, remotely. VPN works by creating a secure, encrypted connection through the internet between your computer and the Health Center network. Therefore, your computer must be connected to the Internet before you can establish a VPN session. To obtain the VPN software, call the UCHC Help Desk at 679-4400 or complete the UCHC Employee Remote Access Request Form and email to the Help Desk at  HelpDesk@uchc.edu. To install and use VPN, read the UCHC IT instruction manual on installing and using VPN.
How can I access or get a copy of SPSS or other statistics program?
  • UCHC has a license for SPSS 17 (now called PASW Statistics 17 as the vendor is changing their name to Predictive Analytics Software – a division of IBM) that allows us to install on 100 PC’s. We have a few licenses left. This is a yearly license that will expire at the end of April, 2010; IT may or may not renew the license at that time.

If you would like an install done please contact the help desk at 679-4400 to request an install. You will need to supply the computer name, serial number and UCHC asset tag for the install (we have to track where we are installed from year to year). We can only install on UCHC owned assets and installation can be done remotely or we can visit the PC.

If we choose to relicense at expiration time we will create an install for the latest version of PASW Statistics that is currently available. This may cause you to move to a new version (which could be problematic if you are in the middle of a study).

If you prefer, there are licenses available through the UConn Software Licensing group at Storrs for either SPSS 16 or PASW Statistics 17 for $275 per computer. This license is slightly different than ours in that includes a module that ours doesn’t and includes an ancillary graphing package called AMOS. The Storrs license is a perpetual license that you can install on your office PC and a home PC or laptop (to be used by the same individual only and not simultaneously). It includes support from SPSS (while they offer support for the product) and maintenance releases. It does not, however, allow you to upgrade to a newer version. For example, if you install SPSS 16 you are entitled to the maintenance release to SPSS 16.0.2 but you are not entitled to PASW Statistics 17. If you desire the upgrade to the newer version there would be an additional $275 license fee that you would have to pay Storrs. Since it never expires you will have the benefit of having a stable statistics platform (until which time the software is no longer compatible with current operating systems and hardware).
